Tabu Taid: An Esteemed Educationist and Linguist

Tabu Taid, was a prominent educationist, linguist, and administrator from Assam, India. Born in the village of Ghunasuti near North Lakhimpur, Taid was a respected figure in the fields of education and linguistics, particularly known for his efforts in promoting and preserving the Mising language.


Early Life and Education

Tabu Taid was born in Ghunasuti, a village in North Lakhimpur, Assam. From a young age, he demonstrated a keen interest in education and linguistics, which led him to pursue higher studies in these fields.


Career in Education

Taid began his career as a lecturer in the Department of English at Cotton College in Guwahati. His dedication to education and his community's development quickly propelled him into administrative roles. In 1981, he was appointed as a deputy director of Public Instruction, marking the beginning of his influential career in educational administration.


Contributions to Linguistics

As a linguist, Taid played a crucial role in the promotion and preservation of the Mising language, a significant part of the cultural heritage of the Mising community. His work in this area earned him widespread recognition and respect among his peers and the community.


Leadership and Administration

Taid's leadership extended beyond academia. He served as the chairman of the Secondary Education Board of Assam (SEBA) until his retirement in 2000. However, his commitment to education continued as he chaired the State Selection Board (SSB) until February 2004. His administrative acumen significantly contributed to the advancement of educational standards in Assam.


Recognition and Legacy

Throughout his life, Taid received numerous accolades for his contributions to education and linguistics. His passing in August 2019 was met with widespread mourning and respect, highlighting his profound impact on his community and the state of Assam. Assam's Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and other dignitaries honored him with a state funeral, underscoring his significant contributions to the state and its people​​.


Taid's legacy continues to inspire educators and linguists in Assam and beyond. His dedication to the Mising language and his efforts to improve educational standards have left an enduring mark on the community he so passionately served.
